Osama Calls on Ummah to Continue Jehad Denies Involvement in Embassy Bombings PESHAWAR: Saudi dissident Osama Bin Laden for the first time on Thursday denied his involvement in the August 7 bombings at the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The 42-year-old Bin Laden contacted this correspondent on satellite phone at 9:00 pm on Thursday to convey his statement through another Islamic leader Dr Ayman Al-Zawahiri, head of Egyptian Islamic Jehad organisation which was held responsible for the murder of Egypt's president Anwar Sadaat. Following is Bin Laden's message: "Osama Bin Laden calls on the Ummah to continue Jehad against Jews and Americans to liberate their holy places. In the meantime, he denies any involvement in the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam bombings." When asked about Osama Bin Laden's whereabouts, Al-Zawahiri said that he was somewhere in the area. However, he didn't disclose the place from where he was speaking in Afghanistan. This scribe had a feeling that Osama Bin Laden was sitting next to Al-Zawahiri when he telephoned Peshawar. As Osama speaks Arabic, he asked Al-Zawahiri to speak in his fluent English to The News. The bespectacled Al-Zawahiri was seated next to Bin Laden in May this year when the latter announced at a press conference the launching of International Islamic Front Against America and Israel. Al-Zawahiri's Al-Jehad or Islamic Jehad outfit was mentioned as a component of this international front. On that occasion, Al-Zawahiri told The News that the fact his group was able to strike in Cairo and other urban centres in Egypt explained its widespread support among the people. It may be mentioned that Bin Laden is the top suspect in the recent bombings at the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salam which killed over 250 people. He has been accused as the financier of an international Islamic Army. This was the first time that the Saudi-born millionaire gave his reaction and denied his role in the bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. However, he was defiant as ever and his appeal to Muslims to continue Jehad against the Jews and Americans to liberate the holy places showed that he wasn't bothered about the US threats. Barely 45 minutes after Dr Al-Zawahiri's telephonic conversation with this correspondent, the Americans struck and reportedly hit both Khost, where he had held his press conference in May this year, and Jalalabad, where he first took refuge after arriving from Sudan in May 1996.
