OT, to anybody concerned about PII heat, get a PC Power and Cooling heatsink/fan. (PC Power and Cooling, Carlsbad, CA - see most issues of PC Magazine.) Fairly expensive as fans go (20-something bucks) but they are ball-bearing fans and won't crap-out after a year.

NOT a commercial, just a satisfied customer of many years. They've been touted by Jerry Pournelle in Byte for years, and with good reason.

I recently put together a dual 400 mHz PII system (ASUS p2BD mother board) and those suckers run COLD. No, I mean dead, stone, cold.

Ian, do you have a feeling that the PII is too hot
to be used in a small enclosure like the iMac? The
heat dissipation was one of the things the Compaq
guy was marveling over.

They'll probably work it out. It's likely the first thing they have to consider when designing their respective trash cans. The chassis and module integration on the iMac is a beautiful piece on engineering -- partly owing to the fact that the G3 doesn't require a heat sink the size of Candlestick Park.

GIRL: "Oh, your new Compaq Vesuvius 'all-in-one' is so pretty. And I love the way it glows inside."

GUY: "Glows?... OH SH*T!!!"

In any case, looks like no iMac competition in the
looks department until next summer, if then.

Apple's been Microsoft's R&D department for years, and the ID department for every other computer company since the original Apple IIs. By the time summer 99 rolls around Apple will still be ahead of the curve. These PC guys are just shameless.
