You are missing what LU is working on in the wings. They have a 9000/500 type product
that they will introduce soon. They are adding multiservice to core ATM. They are
working on a high-end router. They are devoting a massive amount of resources to these
projects.

Why of course, I wouldn't expect LU to be sitting idly by, twittling their thumbs. Suppose ASND asks for too much and the talks fall through, or someone else buys them first. Besides, what do you think they're going to do with all their engineers? Work on a bigger 5ESS? I think not!

Typically these products need 1-2 years of debugging after they are introduced before they're ready for prime time. I would think for LU, it will take more time since they're not experienced in data and IP. By that time, I think the war will be over. Cisco will have locked up the largest telco customers. The door will be closed, and LU will eventually become like DEC today, battling for the niche markets.

If LU knows what's good for them, they will buy ASND for 75-80 in October. They have no time to waste.

Excellent comments. The bottom line is that today's CIEN debacle is a warning bell for all ASND shareholders. LU was behind in WDM, and they caught up. Granted, WDM is a different market from ATM, and CIEN is no ASND (I should really give credit where credit is due, and say CSCC). However, this trampling of CIEN shows that LU can survive on its own very well.
