Investigating the
President:
Complete
Coverage

By Heather J. Maher
ABCNEWS.com
Aug. 21 -ABCNEWS has learned that FBI tests
have confirmed the presence of "human fluid
containing DNA material" on the blue cocktail dress
Monica Lewinsky gave prosecutors a few weeks
ago, claiming it contained evidence of a sexual
encounter with President Clinton.
Sources say when Independent Prosecutor Ken Starr
received the results, he
requested a sample of
Clinton's DNA, which the
president submitted before
his testimony Monday to
the federal grand jury
investigating whether he
committed perjury or
obstructed justice.
In that testimony,
Clinton admitted to a
relationship with Lewinsky
that was "not appropriate,"
and testified that certain
sexual acts had occurred.
An ABCNEWS poll taken before Thursday's military
strikes were ordered, but after his national address Monday
night, found that Clinton's favorability rating has dropped 15
points since last month.

Court Hears from Lewinsky Again
On Thursday, the grand jury heard from Lewinsky a second
time, just three days they heard Clinton testify for 5-1/2 hours
via closed-circuit camera from the White House.
Today, Lewinsky's lawyer, Jacob Stein, said, "It's all
over. Our goal was to get Monica Lewinsky immunity in front
of the grand jury, it's all over."
As for Clinton, the scandal has taken a back seat to
international matters. On Thursday, he ordered major U.S.
military strikes on terrorist targets in Afghanistan and Sudan.
His attention is now on issues of national security, even as
pundits make the inevitable comparisons to "Wag the Dog,"
and pollsters try to figure out if the public supports the military
action.

Contradictory Stories?
Lewinsky spokeswoman Judy Smith said
Thursday, "Ms. Lewinsky is really looking
forward to beginning the process of
rebuilding her life," Smith added that
though Lewinsky was told she is finished testifying, she plans
to continue to cooperate with the investigation.
In her second appearance before jurors, sources told
ABCNEWS that Lewinsky planned to contradict key parts of
what the president told the grand jury-and the nation - on
Monday.
She was expected to tell the grand jury that her dealings
with Clinton constituted sexual relations, as defined by the
court in the Paula Corbin Jones case. Clinton has denied what
transpired between the two met that court-approved
definition, and in his Jones deposition, denied having sexual
relations with Lewinsky.
In a dramatic televised address to the nation Monday
night, Clinton admitted that the two had had an "inappropriate
relationship," but insisted that he did not commit perjury in the
Jones case.
The grand jury is also reportedly is trying to unravel the
mystery of how certain gifts Clinton gave Lewinsky landed in
the possession of presidential secretary Betty Currie.
ABCNEWS has learned that when Starr asked Clinton
whether he instructed Currie to ask Lewinsky to return the
gifts, the president did not give a definitive answer.

A Woman Scorned?
Friends of Monica
Lewinsky describe
her as emotionally
wrought and angry at
President Clinton.
Sources close to
Lewinsky say she
believes the
president's Monday
night speech
cheapened what she
had been led to
believe was an
emotional
relationship between
the two.
And she's viewed as a
time bomb, waiting to
explode. That could
take the form of
damaging new
revelations to the grand
jury, perhaps
implicating the
president in the return
of gifts that had been
subpoeaned by the
grand jury.
