and who would you suggest to replace him, Christopher? We have a constitutional succession formula. I don't happen to like Gore, and he might be forced to resign himself in a year if a fundraising independent counsel gets appointed (probably why Reno is dragging her feet so -- she know in his case there is clear evidence and grounds for impeachment). Maybe some day we'll get to Gingrich, (I hope the person who suggested that Gore would pardon Clinton and than name him VP was only joking, but I put nothing past this administration), who I view as no gift at all, but at least he never promised the most ethical administration in history and his book deal, PAC, and other stuff, while unsavory, aren't on the level of the Clinton-Gore violations. As to two years from now, I have already posted on this thread my belief that we need a person of genuine stature and integrity to salvage any sort of public confidence in the federal government, and the only person I see on the horizon who fits the bill and has a chance of getting elected is Gen. Colin Powell. (There are some fine women out there, but sadly the country isn't ready yet to elect a woman president.) (However, if it's true that people elect the leaders they deserve, we'll probably wind up with Marion Barry.) As to the mid term future, I am somewhere between deeply discouraged and depressed. The process of getting elected these days is so traumatic and requires so many compromises of integrity to get the funding you need, that I can't see how any person who is emotionally and intellectually qualified to govern would ever be willing or able to survive the elective process. I know every generation thinks the next generation is going to hell in a handbasket, but sometimes they are right! (As is said, even paranoid people have real enemies.) Give me some reason to hope, please!
