Robin,
I'm not a tech person, but I was wondering about UNIX. I think your observation is very acute. I have also seen comments about the lack of windows stability for enterprise computing. What exactly does that mean?

Good point. Everyone loves Linux and its open code philosophy.

It has databases ported over and next comes good, public domain, accounting, word processing, etc.

Unfortunately, its strength is that it is a open system with no one really owning it. A Committee must agree on a new item in order launch it and make it stick.

So, the problem with making a good GUI is that it is done by committee.

A camel is a horse put together by a committee.

The groupies I know just use X windows.

The brains that are doing all the free programing for Linux are working hot and heavy to release a Windows emulator (the only thing holding the effort up is most of them feel that Windows is an inferior computing invironment.

But if, as I've heard and seen, a 486 with Linux runs circles around a Pentium with NT4.0, perhaps a Pentium with the emulator will run Office 97 at an acceptable rate. Only time will tell.

Many servers are already running Linux: linux.org and an Alpha version of Linux is either out now or shortly will be. As I've said before, success of Alpha is up to Compaq marketing. There is a ground swell of annoyance building against the WinTel near-monopoly.
