This is exactly what S3 should have done last year when they dropped the ball and treated us to 3, 4, 5, ... bad quarters. At least now things are looking up for the better. I would guess that it would take a bit for ATI to integrate an acquisition's chip into their products, which would give S3 that much more time to regain some territory. What an idea, S3 and ATI merging. They would probably sew up 50 - 60% of the graphics market and cause a lot of the other companies to drop out or merge with the new powerhouse. This would also save the two companies a possible pattern of leapfrog that they may be starting.

On the topic of Savage and the new IBM, I hope that it is the base chip, not an option, that is if it is really there at all. I have read several reports (rumors) about IBM and S3. Someone reported that IBM dropped an order for the newest Trio3D from S3 and that maybe the reason why was to get the Savage instead. If the new IBM has the Savage, I would be interested in how long they have had it around and had worked with S3. This might hint at a much stronger relationship between S3 and IBM, which would probably mean that ATI would suffer some lost business (I believe that ATI was in quite a few IBMs last year). A few wins as the base chip for IBM, Compaq, or Dell, and this company and stock is back. Greg, sorry to not get back to you with the date, I was on a mini vacation to Maine for the weekend.

If machines with the Savage start shipping in September, will we see an earnings surprise for the quarter? The financial statements always say that business tends to be backend loaded to the last month of the quarter which is September.

Being last to market has never hurt ATI in the long term as long as
the product offers decent price/performance and leading edge technology. ATI was first with AGP 2.0X, wonder whats next. ATI's next graphics chipset not being ready just could mean ATI is waiting for everyone else to release their next Gen chips before ATI finalizes theirs.

As for Acquisitions. ATI is going to need to acquire or develop in
house PC Chip set technology or die a slow death. Intel will soon release its integrated PC chipset and Graphics chip and SIS just recently released their integrated chipset too. For low cost PC buying an integrated PC/Graphics chipset seems to be the way to go.

ATI might even buy IDTI for their WinChip to develop a fully integrated PC on a chip. IDTI is worth less than US$500M. But with
the Canadian $$ getting cheaper, ATI better do something quick.

>>> Regarding the ATI article about them looking for someone to buy, this gives some credit to the rumors I am hearing regarding ATI next generation of product. ATI might be forced to buy technology because rumor has it that ATI next chips are not ready or just don't compare well with products on the market or ready to be released. If this is the case ATI will see its market cap go south just like what happened to S3.<<<
