Crashing computers? Sounds like a MS Windows man. Linux will USUALLY not crash except in exceptional circumstances. X can cause system hangs that can be exceptionally tricky to get out of without rebooting. I have seen keyboard lockups. They are supposed to time out. But I let one run once for 1 hour and finally rebooted and had to e2fsck to get the file system back. Don't believe the Linux cheerleaders that you will never have a crash with Linux. You will. Netscape can and will crash the system. Completely. And a Linux or UNIX crash or reboot without explicitly halting first is MUCH more serious than a win95 crash (usually, although I know of a few exceptions recently:) If you don't back up your data you are a plumb fool. And Linux for things like tape backup or parallel port zip drives etc., is not charmer. Actually on slackware the control alt delete is mapped to a halt anyway so it is not that serious. But if you have a Keyboard lockup, U_ARE_F____D. It is just plain a lot harder to figure out how to do things. The advantage is Linux is generally faster and more reliable in its disk and tape writing functions once you figure out how to do it. Getting there with Linux is a lot steeper curve than windows. It's very frustrating at times. Once you get there the results CAN be very surprising in their quality. Unix is a tool with a much sharper edge. But it requires skill to use it well. EC<:-}
