Stitch,

<<< Instead of the U.S. taking advantage of the cold war victory we are fumbling the ball in follow up execution. >>>>

Exactly!!!

Maybe the lesson is that we must actually provide a service that benefits others not just ourselves??? Nah, that's not the answer we want to hear.

Derrick

Stitch, how would you recommend that we take advantage of this opportunity. You can not continue to throw good money after bad. If Japan would liquidate the assets of the failed banks, this would creat a profit opportunity which would light a spark in that economy. Politicians and bureaucrats trying to maintain their jobs and the jobs of their benafactors is what is killing Japan.
It kills me to hear you guys talk about financial markets as if they are above the 'petty influence of politics or government policies.' If history teaches us anything it is that any people could prosper or wallow in squalor. The difference is the environment created by the governments under which these peoples exist. Look at mainland China vs. Hong Kong.
Rule of law might seem like a small thing compared to the crisis's in east asia but that is one of the missing ingredients in Russia and Indonesia that lead to this mess. That is why Clinton is in trouble, because no man is above the law in this land. Unfortunately the only guidance these poor countries are getting from the west if from a bunch of damm socialialists running the IMF according to some idiotic cock book. Devalue, increase taxes, and above all, raise interest rates. Now since thats failed miserably they are telling Russia and China to not devalue. Too late.

Just my two cents worth
