As a libertarian I would think that you would only want the government to do the most basic tasks - protecting the country from outsiders, protecting the citizens from each other, educating the public, ... The essentials.

If a person wants to be an artist, they can make art. If they want to make a living at making art, they can try to sell their art and if others deem their art to be of good quality, they will make a living making art.

Why does the govt have to be involved?

Given the fact that a limited amont of money will be appropriated for various artists, there will come a point where the govt will have to make a choice between what is good art and what is bad art. Do we want the govt telling us this?

When the government forces support of NEA, Hockey Exhibitions or whatever, it just creates more problems, like what merits our support.

Let every man decide for himself, just as he does when he buys toothpaste or a new car. Then everyone can support what they want, and to the extent they want. No problems.
