I think you're right. The point I was getting at is that good technology is not the winning hand, it's the ante. Hard work to get interest, consensus, standards that will drive related products, evangelism to develop momentum against competing technologies, and real products in the marketplace is what makes the technology important. And Apple hasn't had the ability to do that in a long time. I was on vacation for a week so I'm just getting caught up on the furious action, currently on the 18th on this thread...

1394 is an interesting topic for a lot more than it's pure value as an interconnect. Combining USB and 1394 in client systems takes a lot of the headache out of configuring systems that work. That would seem to shift the pendulum back to the channel distribution folks and away from the BTO guys like Dell, since almost anyone including the end user ought to be able to plug the stuff together. I'm just starting to dig into what the dynamics of that will be in 6 months or a year, if the OS support appears in a robust enough form.
