Maybe it's also a direct commentary on the quality of teaching in American schools, Bob. If the teacher keeps the subject interesting enough, the student will learn & be inspired to continue learning.

Besides, only History buffs would find the antiquated language of Cooper's works interesting today. Here again, a true teacher will manage to make 200-yr-old words exciting. IMO, the mix that produces an effective teacher is sadly lacking among those who have entered the profession in the past 30 yrs. That, and other reasons(mainly lack of parental involvement) have been the cause for such poor results from our educational taxes.

Re your remark about how many Americans know that Omaha Beach in at Normandy, France etc.-- couldn't this be explained by the fact that the importance of a liberal education(which includes history, social studies, etc) has been diminished in recent yrs?
