Team defends McGwire's use of performance enhancer

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - Mark McGwire pounded out his 53rd home run
Sunday as the St. Louis Cardinals defended the slugger's use of a
performance-enhancing substance in his relentless pursuit of
Roger Maris's single-season record.

McGwire, now just nine runs shy of breaking the most revered record
in U.S. sports -- Maris's 61 homers in 1961 -- has admitted using
androstenedione as part of his training regimen.

The Cardinals said Sunday that the drug, which is on the
International Olympics Committee's list of banned substances, was
not considered illegal by baseball and had shown none of the side
effects of steroids.

The team and McGwire issued a joint statement regarding the
performance-enhancer of choice of the man who has become the
biggest draw in baseball and the biggest story in U.S. sports
this year.

''Androstenedione is a natural substance which is a natural
precursor product of testosterone,'' the statement said. ''It has
no proven anabolic steroid effects nor significant side effects.
It contains no testosterone, it stimulates a slight increase in
one's natural testosterone levels for a short period of time
(one hour).''

St Louis team doctors said they had no problem with the use of
the controversial nutritional supplement by the muscle-bound McGwire,
who is known not only for the prodigious number of home runs he hits,
but for the titanic nature of his blasts.

''Taken approximately one hour before, it may make one's workout
more efficient,'' the statement said.''Due to current research that
lacks any documentary evidence of any adverse side effects, the
Cardinals medical staff cannot object to Mark's choice to use this
legal and over-the-counter supplement.''

McGwire also has said he uses creatine, another nutritional
supplement that helps build muscles.
