I know of Archimedes Patti, but I haven't read his book. Dad was an Army officer, did a tour in Viet Nam back in 1962 before anyone was paying much attention to the place. Before JFK stumbled into getting Diem assassinated and leaving the resulting mess for Lyndon Johnson to screw up. People forget that in the Presidential election of 1964, before the Gulf of Tonkin, Barry Goldwater advocated either establishing a strategy for winning a war in Viet Nam or getting the hell out. He was labeled a war-monger and madman for his effort by the likes of Chet Huntley and Walter Cronkite. Lyndon denied that there was a war in Viet Nam, and the idiot press served as his echo chamber. Later they would turn on him, but where were they when we could have debated the issue? If we had either stayed out or had a strategy for winning a war there we could have spared thousands and thousands of soldier's lives.
