The reason we have this disconnect between crime rate and jail rate is because we are not *consistent* in how we sentence our convicts. And then administer the sentences. This seriously undermines the deterrent value of prison. If we had a more consistent, reliable criminal justice system, you'd see crime drop and you'd see jail populations normalize. You don't need a single confiscated gun to build a decent society.
The NRA is dead right on one score. There are forces in our legislature and media who will stop at nothing to dismantle civilian gun ownership in America. The main line of defense against this gcreeping revisionism is a strong gun lobby. The "communitarian" perversion of the Second Amendment that is now popular among liberal appellate courts casts this in stark relief. This is the sharp end of the wedge that is being driven into the centrally American concept of a government by private citizens. What is especially ugly is when the anti-gun activists start to use "the children" as a human shield for their real agenda. And the press is not being fair about this either. Look at the orgiastic coverage of the occasional schoolhouse shooting. There are far more instances of guns being used in aborting violent crimes, but there's a silent pact throughout the media to downplay this. Because it runs counter to editorial policy, which is to Demonize the Privately-owned firearm.

Christine, please do not misread the tone or intentions of these two posts. I am not seeking to ridicule or dismiss you or your opinions. However, re guns you express some things as apparent fact when instead they are imho quite controversial; not at all established. My goal here is to disagree and to prevent the declarative dissemination of what I deem to be corrosively anti-democratic disinformation. Once again - not personal!! Alex
