Darwin Award Runner Up Nomination From Toronto Star (print version) 1998 08 24 A man who was smoking while filling up his gas tank in a parking garage was taken to the burn unit at St Michael's Wellesley Central Hospital with third-degree burns. The Fire department was called to a highrise apartment building at Emmett Ave, in the Jane St. and Weston Rd. area yesterday afternoon. "He was refuelling his car with gasoline and lit a cigarette -- the gasoline exploded", said Platoon Chief Les Banski of the Toronto Fire Department. Because it was a highrise apartment building, five pumper trucks, a rescue truck and the ambulance bus were dispatched. "Smoke is life-threatening - that's what we're concerned with in a building like this", Banski said.
