Thanks for the info, John. I'll post your comments on the ASND thread and ask for a critique.

John,

Looks like you beat me to the punch when I was posting. Pleased to meet you.

I'd be interested in your critique of my assessment of the IBM SNA matter, as I represented it my post. Thanks,

Regards, Frank C.

John, Bucky89 response to your MPLS comments (via ASND thread). Why don't you and Frank come over to the ASND thread to discuss it?

Hi djane,

I don't know where you got this comment, but would you kindly post this response?
Thanks!

The IETF standard for MPLS is still being worked on, and NO ONE has a compliant implementation for MPLS because the standard doesn't exist yet.

Cisco has Tag switching, and IBM has something similar. Ascend has CBX500/GX550 and IP Navigator. Currently, all implementations are pre-standard, but only Ascend's implementation is being used in ISP networks. Not only is I3S and Frontier using it as announced in press releases, but one of the nation's largest telecom companies is close
to a decision about it (I think you can guess who that is).

No one is using Cisco's Tag switching today (..chuckle..). It is not scalable, and has billing and administrative issues that have yet to be addressed. The main difference between Ascend's implementation and Cisco's is that Ascend's uses ATM and can leverage the QoS mechanisms already built into ATM. Cisco's implementation uses the TOS byte and some of the QoS issues are still being worked on. There are some
VERY complex issues to work out such as integration of RSVP. But Cisco is very confident that they can work them out. The ISP's I've been working with are somewhat less enthusiastic, from what I can tell.
