Jim,

Dictatorships are not always bad. The world is not always perfect and sometimes the ability to maintain order in harsh circumstances can save lives and provide stability when basic necessities may not be provided for in any other way.

i had the opportunity to attend an american university over seas which happened to have in attendance family members of several US allies who happened to be dictators: Marcos, Sadat, Seles, (Amin visited, no children in attendance)
many of the conversations were centered around basic human rights, and the ability to provide basic provisions to citizens. The choices are not always clear.
Even when the country has great wealth like the United Arab Emirates, it is not always easy to distribute. Building infrastructure can be very slow and difficult. People often resist change even when it has a positive end result.

in a perfect world democracy is preferable to a monarchy or dictatorship, but the world is unfortunately far from perfect.
