james-- well, had washington been a little more inclined to rule, and had he had children, we could have very easily turned the office of president into a lifetime appointment, maybe even a dynastic position. good luck to all, trey

I hate discussing politics on this thread but I must strongly disagree. Letting the masses rule undirected would lead to chaos. As it is now we pay sports personnel, high school drop out factory workers etc more than teachers and other educated contributers to our future. Our society promised the right to PURSUE happiness. No where did it guarantee happiness. Just because you are in the US, it does not mean that you have the right to get over paid, rape the land etc. Every time I see a logger on TV complaining because we are being silly in trying to save the last grove of 1000 year old trees, his only justification for cutting them down is he would be out of a job. Well buddy, you should have thought about that before you dropped out of school and decided your sole contribution in life was going to be destroying something our great grand kids may never see. If you truely believe in the intelligence of the average American, look at the polls. 99 percent of americans think Clinton is an adulterer, cheat, his wife swindled money on and on, yet he enjoys the highest approval rating of any recent presidency. Washington DC re-elected a mayor caught on video smoking crack with a hooker, and OJ was found innocent. It is wrong for us to discriminate and not give free education and health care to ILLEGAL aliens in California. Yes, the average man on the street is obviously a genious. <ggg> While we work hard and risk losses trying to grow our money in the stock market, someone in this country right now is making toast in the bathtub and will be sueing the manufacterer tomorrow because it wasn't written in big enough letters that they shouldn't do that. Right here in Boise, after 3 weeks of warnings on every news channel telling people not to put their infants in the front seat if they had air bags, some lady did it anyway and was shocked when her child was killed in an accident and is now going to file suit. Even in the military our equipment has "stupid labels". Don't stick your head in front of the radar dish, oil is slippery when spilled etc. If we let the average american rule, Bozo the clown will be the next president. Actually with as far as political correctness has gone, it would probably be the special olympic gold medal winner with an IQ of 2 wondering what the red button did at at the White House. We need some people with common sense in control and they need to be able to override popular sentiment when it gets out of hand. Hitler was a horrible man but in these politically correct times, we forget he also did some great things ( autovon system copied by our interstate system after the war, volkwagons as cheap reliable transportation) He picked on a common enemy (Jews) to rally the german masses that were in chaos which was wrong but does anyone think we don't move from enemy to enemy for other than noble reasons? The US will always have an arch rival. Our economy depends on it. Without defense spending, there would be no economy or technological break throughs. We didn't hide all those Germans here for nothing after the war. The average american has no idea what our government does everyday in the way of border violations, espionage etc and doesn't want to know. The main difference is we get caught less often because we have better technology and better cover stories. I seem to have rambled but basically I will take the knowledgable few over Joe six-pack running things. I heard a good dialog on NPR a short time ago I also agreed with where they were pointing out that our Jury system is now outdated. The average person can't judge a MSFT vs NSCP or SUNW court case due to the complexity of law governing software source codes etc. nor can the average person comprehend DNA evidence in a murder trial. A jury of experts will soon be required for all but the simplest court cases soon. I personally don't have a problem with that. I would rather have my fate in the hands of someone that can make a KNOWLEDGABLE decision rather than someone that can't figure out that DNA + blood in vehicle + motive + stupid aliby etc etc etc = GUILTY
