<<Regarding those US auto makers...
Probably as a consequence of my advancing age, I was
thinking of the debacle in the 70s when the auto makers
lost huge market share to foreign companies.>>

The US auto makers lost market share due to poor quality compared to foreign competition. They did have product offerings! Remember the Chevy Vega? Ford Pinto? AMC Gremlin? There's a big difference between choosing to not offer a product and offering an inferior product. You are confusing these two issues. Dell has chosen not to participate in the sub-$1000 PC market segment at this time because margins are slim and support requirements are high. Are Compaq and HP really making any money is this segment? Isn't it becoming saturated by 3rd and 4th tier vendors already?

<<My point would still stand today. Ford shows up in YHOO
as trading at under 3 times earnings. What price would
DELL trade at for that multiple?>>

I'll answer this question with a question. What multiple would Ford trade at if it matched Dell's rate of growth?

The market shift was to quality & service at a fair price...not cheap products. GM, Ford & Chrysler produced "cheap" little cars that people only bought once. The reason that Japan has been successful is based on delivering consistent quality...exactly like Dell.

This is exactly what will happen in the foreseeable future. Test your PC to see how good it is. Turn your volume on. Don't sell DELL till you are satisfied.
