Sudan Disputes Soil Sample

P.S. Supposedly Sudan is asking for an indepedant investigation of the factory, and that the U.S. is "considering" it. Makes me wonder.

THE COMSTOCK PARTNERS FUNDS
CURRENT MARKET OUTLOOK

THE INFORMATION PRESENTED BELOW REFLECTS THE CURRENT MARKET VIEWS OF COMSTOCK PARTNERS, INC. THESE VIEWS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME IN RESPONSE TO CHANGING MARKET CONDITIONS.

08/25/98

The deflationary bear market which we have been predicting for over a year has started. We believe the market will continue to decline to levels below 5,000 on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Deflationary bear markets are by far the worst bear markets. The last one in the country started in 1929 when the market declined by 90%. Japan experienced one starting in 1989 and the Nikkei 225 Index has yet to recover after being down over 60%.

Deflation is permeating the globe. Japanese and Russian banks are in major trouble while competitive devaluations continue in order to jump start their economies. Asia and Latin America are in a similar bind. There is no reason to think that Europe and the US can be insulated from this worldwide phenomenon.

The marketplace is confirming our opinion with the worst breadth numbers in history as well as commodities dropping to lows. In addition, even as US Treasury bonds rally, junk bonds refuse to rally along with them.

Our funds are positioned to benefit from a deflationary bear market with long positions in US Treasury bonds and short exposure achieved through puts and common stock shorts.
