Good points......
DELL is a good company with good management, no question.....
but one thing that no one ever talks about is that DELL owns NO technology.......that is to say, they have a business model that works VERY VERY WELL, however, nothing they do is proprietary....
at least with CPQ and DEC we have alpha and the possibility of a 64 bit NT platform, oh and don't forget the service arm (not a technology though).

CPQ once was the princess of the ball a few years ago, today...that is DELL tomorrow, next year.......who knows.
I wished I would have bought DELL, but I didnt, I still may purchase some, but $ for $ CPQ is a safer play at the moment.

Unfair Comparison?

It's always dangerous to make investment decisions based on a stock's _past_ performance. Will CPQ be up 50% from its current price this time next year? I hope so but the only thing I can state emphatically is that chances of CPQ gaining 50% are far greater than DELL shares tripling again during the next year (split adjusted).

What about the chances of Dell just rising 50%? Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt still be holding CPQ if I didnt think it had a chance, but on the other hand, who has the better record, Dell or CPQ? WHo has the better return on investment?

As to past performance, fair comment, but onn the other hand, and all things being equal, does a company whose stock keeps rising inspire more confidence than one who has gone nowhere for a year.

BTW, dont worry about Uncle Sam, I have made NO money whatsoever on my CPQ ( down 10% on paper), and up nearly 95% on Dell. So selling the CPQ is not going to cause me a tax problem!

-- I thought RudeDog owned Dell. Or he did the last time we exchanged messages. Did you sell your Dell RudeDog?
