Your point is well taken. But CSCO was not the only company giving away generous options in the early years. Most of the folks I know in the business have income from those options that makes a salary or bonus inconsequential. The real possibility of having this happen today drives many young people to dedicated effort and innovative thinking to move their companies to greater success, but it creates its own problems.

Although it is still possible for a smart young person with drive to become financially set for life either with an innovative start-up or by making a key contribution to a major player, many of the folks who were in that position 5 or 10 years ago are no longer willing to put in the 120 hour weeks fueled by pizza and caffeine. Intel, MSFT, CSCO, CPQ, and others with an ongoing need for the best talent have this problem - many of the gifted people who placed a bet on their ability to succeed, and won, have much less incentive to play another hand.

CSCO is a great company, one of the tech innovators. I love working with bright, capable people, and about the only reason I keep my hand in the game is to maintain relationships where I get to do that. I have gotten to the point where I find myself spending the bulk of each day with my wife and family, doing things that have little to do with the industry... and my personal time has gotten much more valuable to me than it would be to CSCO or any other tech company, except for the occasional half-day stint, where their budgets and my priorities seem to intersect.
