In the October 1998 Fortune (Special Investor's Edition), we discover that AXA controls the brokerage DLJ. On the same page, Alcatel is named. No mention of any possible association between AXA and Alcatel, but interesting in that these two are promoted in the article as the companies to lead the French business revolution.

"Like AXA, France's Alcatel is shaking up the business it's in: telecom hardware. Long a leader in Europe, Alcatel has just gone through a major restructuring, spinning off noncore businesses like power generation and rail transportation. In June, Alcatel announced the acquisition of DSC Communication, a major U.S. maker of network-access equipment and switches for phone giants like Bell Atlantic. Once that deal goes through, Alcatel will be able to begin selling more of its hardware through DSC's base in the U.S. - the world's largest telecom equipment market.

Alcatel's European sales should also grow strongly as phone companies like Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom adapt to deregulation and upgrade their networks, according to Solomon Smith Barney's Douglas Smith. Demand for new hardware should enable Alcatel's telecom revenue to grow by 16% during the next several years. Better still, Alcatel trades at a significant discount to other international telecom-gear players like Lucent and Nortel, even though Smith predicts a long-term earnings growth rate of 24%."

Gary

<< Furman Selz has PAIR supplying SBC as dual source with ADTN; another report has PAIR as sole-source, you may have different information. Which is correct?! >>

It depends upon whether you look at SBC pre Ameritech merger or after Ameritch. Ameritech was multi-source. I don't know who or what percentages though.

Best Regards
