You assume things too quickly. I was very much against THAT war. I was also married to a ROTC graduate, and we were lucky enough to go to Vicksburg Ms instead of there. Everyone at V'burg, which is the Waterways Experiment Station (with a Nuclear Effects Lab secreted in the rear) had a minimun of a Master's degree. I would say over half of the military there quietlly disagreed with the war and it's so called 'purpose.' But, even more so, THEY WERE DISMAYED AND DISILLUSIONED BY THE POLITICS DRIVING THE WAR. Had the military done a military job, the 'war' would probably have been won, and within a very short time. It was to Washington's, and JFK's...then LBJ's benefit to see it continue. Republians were in on it too. McCarthy, as I have read, opposed the war much because his home state did, and he believed the public (before we had excessive polls) would back him. His decision was strategic, like all politics, not as self-sacrificing as first blush. I have even seen in print, his admission to this to a light degree...I wish I could remember where...just like McNamara now saying he was against it. Barry Goldwater was against it. He would have probably been a statesman, but never having gotten the chance, we will never know.
Again, YOU are typing a conservative (me) with certain characteristics that do not, historically define conservative...or Republican. It has only been of late, that the Religoious wachos etc have chosen to try to re-define the boundaries. I believe in less govenment, less taxes and more state responsibility. I believe social change should be done by states and more so by families. If I were king, I would eliminate the DEA, education dept, energy dept, housing dept, OSHA, and FIMA...and totally revamp the EPA. I love the environment...and detest extremists on both sides. And, if you have ever noticed...they hold the balance of power.
I really enjoy discussions with you.
