Leland - Is95 is an important standard but it is just not the only one that a group of people could conjure up

You seem to be confusing the standard with the core technology. Standards, shmandards - who cares?! It is the core technology on which Qualcomm has patents. Try reading my original reply to you again, and avoid rereading the garbage Forbes article (you list it in your profile as a hobby - going to Vegas is probably a more lucrative hobby judging by that article.) <g>

As for patent trades, I have no doubt that some swapping will happen, but do you really think that a flip phone (which suffers from the ability of the competition to work around it easily) is worth the same as a Qualcomm patent which is much more readily defended due to the bottlenecks. Intellectual Property is like Real Property in that not all property is equally valuable (as the Real Estate Agents say - 'Location, location, location'). Or, to look at it another way, Qualcomm is receiving a huge amount of royalties from some of the best companies in the business (although exactly at what rates is unknown) which tells me that their IPR is more valuable than most.

I'm sorry to be so blunt here Leland but the subject of what patents QCOM does have and their coverage has been EXTREMELY throughly hashed out in this forum. I believe that you will find that people will in general turn a "blind ear" to this arguement. I really wish that the webmistress had set up a thing to click on for each forum that is a FAQ area. It may take some of the interesting arguements out of this forum but at least people new to the scene like Leland could avoid the hot button issues.
