That sounds right. Still though, it has legitimate uses. I would consider anyone who disputes the fact that apes are our ancestors to "be in denial" because I WANT to connote that person's unhealthy psychological state. The evidence is in. The issue isn't up for grabs in the way that a statement like "Mark McGwyre (sp?) is the greatest home-run hitter ever" is.

Elsa,
Excellent analysis! Or is that because I agree with you? I have the same reaction to "dysfunctional" (anyone who behaves differently than I think they should) and "co-dependent" or "enabler" (someone who doesn't agree with me and supports someone else's "dysfunctional" behavior). It's just a more sophisticated or obscure way of saying, "Boy, are you wrong and stupid."
I do think these words have validity within the psychiatric context, where the clinical meanings are understood. Unfortunately, in public usage they often muddy or end communication more than they clarify it.

Elsa,

I find it an offensive formulation, too, and I think I know why, and it has nothing to do with grammar.

Isn't this a run-on sentence? Wordy?

Would it have been more effective to write:

I also find this an offensive formulation and it has nothing to do with grammar.

Just curious,

Tom

E,

I always thought denial was a river in Egypt.

Nice thread.
