<<<My point is not that I have a problem with this way of thinking. Obviously it is not an ideal situation from a personal point of view, and Id hate to see any of my friends in a climate like that. But what Im trying to say is that the Clintons marriage is no more unhealthy, (in fact imo its preferable) so why do the conservatives keep jumping up and down in shock and disgust?>>>>

It's long been an established fact that appearing on international television and humiliating yourself, making yourself look like a blooming numbskull, having most of the world think you're a blithering idiot and having only your adulterous husband to thank is indeed healthier and advisably more preferable then just staying married for the sake of the finances involved.

Typical unwitting hypocritical leftist response. You invent an issue, convince yourself of its validity and then make a fool of yourself pushing your phony agenda. Come on, produce all the posts from all the conservative men on the radical thread that said they couldn't afford a divorce.

<<Bill "rhymes with yawn" Vaughn,>>

So now, what is this? Your way of providing a mature response? Is that the best you can come up with?

re Now I know you ordinarily live in a cave but even you must have seen that this notion of "affording a divorce" is a pretty common theme among wealthy conservatives. I hear that term every day.

Now I know this was a post to Bill Vaughn, but let me tell you something, Michelle: This is NOT a "pretty common theme" among *any* wealthy conservatives that *I* associate with or know. I beginning to wonder if your concept of "conservative" is something totally foreign to what I know. I associate and very closely identify with people like myself. Let me tell you a little about me then. Then you can decide if I and my friends and family are "conservatives" like the supposed conservatives that you know:

1) I'm a member of Christian Coalition (not very active, but donate money now and then (more "then" than "now", I don't open mail from them anymore, got tired of incessant fund-raising), but have gone to both National and State conventions - very good people there, really enjoyed those.
2) I'm a member of the NRA (possibly my membership has expired, I got tired of the fund-raising letters, so I don't open NRA mail).
3) I'm a lifelong church-attendee.
4) I'm very pro-life. The absurdity of abortion on demand is demonstrated by looking at any person and saying "How did you get so lucky? How come your mother didn't have your heartbeat stopped in the womb, or had your cranial cavity excavated while you were partially born?"

If a person isn't at least two of the above four things, then you're not very conservative.

<<why do the conservatives keep jumping up and down in shock and disgust?>>

Why do you limit the shock and disgust to conservatives? Wouldn't it have been more accurate to ask why "people" react with shock and disgust. I have a problem with this way of thinking.

<<notion of "affording a divorce" is a pretty common theme among wealthy conservatives>>

There you go again - wealthy conservatives. I'm sure wealthy liberals stand in line to be fair and understanding during divorce proceedings.

I think the issue is more one of lifestyle. People (male and female, conservative and liberal) want to either maintain their existing lifestyle, or actually have it improve. Unfortunately, divorce precludes either possibility to happen to both sides of the divorce. Two incomes minus one very rarely equals two or three, unless you are a government that can print money or increase taxes. When people refer to not being able to afford divorce, they either are referring to "political" issues (doesn't look good for the law partner to get a divorce right now - all that dirty laundry being aired) or lifestyle issues (can't afford two mortgages, etc.). That would especially be true for women homemakers that are unsure they would either get equity in court or that their skills are not marketable.
