predicts early recovery.

Shares of computer chip equipment maker Applied
Materials (AMAT) lost 5.7 percent after the
company's announcement that it would fire 2,000
employees and take a fourth-quarter loss. See press
release. Shares fell 1 11/16 to 27 7/8. Needham & Co. analyst John W. Pitzer, however, maintained his "buy" rating on the stock. According to his research report, Pitzer anticipates that the company will begin a recovery by the fourth quarter of 1998 or the first quarter of 1999.
