As things progress along I can see a day when you will be able to run applications from a service provider. The average Joe won't have to be a system administrator. The average Joe will just have to know how to use the applications. What do you think they will call this amazing device that allows these poor soles to do this? How about a NC. How about some substance instead of hype? ----------------------------------infoworld.com Attendees at the conference were enthusiastic about the possibilities posed by McNealy but were also anxious to find out more about actual implementation. "They sound good, but what are the real applications and how do we do it?" said Gloria Nogales, project manager of network technologies and messaging and enhanced services at AirTouch International, in Walnut Creek, Calif. Another attendee noted that a missing piece of the puzzle is figuring out how to bill customers for new services. -------------------------------------------- I'm skeptical about whether the download and execute model can ever be made to run reliably and in a secure manner unless in a very controlled setting (eg. in house). Certainly, the typical unix approach (design a spec and compete on implementation) applied to NC's has produced the same negative result -- NC's are not interchangeable. I still don't see where Java eliminates the potential versioning and backwards compatability problems associated with downloading and running app code (eg. applet runs with JDK 1.1 but not with 1.2). Forget about the problems with the PC and Windows. The web today, is a complex unmangeable and unreliable mess. Its a security nightmare. McNealy complains about the frequent upgrading and growing complexity and bloat of the Microsoft Windows desktop. He laughs it off as having a mainframe on every desk. Tell me, Mr. McNealy, is the browser model any different? I seem to see the same frequent upgrading, growing complexity, and bloat. Is there any synergy between the browser and Java? Java and the NC only offer modest improvements on a flawed architecture and no real solution.
