You advice is perhaps good for long term investing. When I say long term I mean more than five years; however, one should realize that the market performance is now directly intertwined with the US economy. This wasn't true 10 year ago, but now so many people are invested in the market that its performance determines how much they spend or not.

Buying and holding stocks is an okay idea; however, buying and selling at critical times can be more profitable. Take a look at NMGC. Its dominating the market. All analysts give it a BUY or STRONG BUY; however, the stock is lower than it was two years ago. WHY? Because the semi sector is having hard times even though this company is growing faster than 100% a year. Long term this stock should do fine given that no major mishaps occur; however, this stock might be around in ten years...and then would holding have been worth it while the market is telling you to sell it?
