They tried to squeeze the speculators by playing the markets, and people knew that. This is the sole purpose of doing this to stabilize the market. The market will be much normal when the big players are out. They are sometimes the markets.

Check the news on that day from Yahoo side. Actually, it does not matter to know how they did it. I can speculate based on my experience. If you are interested, read my past posts to see how I would have done that if I were them.

Hi Geoff Nunn; *** Off Topic *** About the HK intervention...
I read the articles from the South China Morning Post, which
is published in Hong Kong. A simple login will get you access:

Basically the government bought stocks, while selling the
next future. In other words, they did a reverse arbitrage.

My only conclusion is that what they would really like to do
is destroy their futures.

While they were supporting stocks, it would have been a
no-brainer to sell stocks and buy the future, and any market
maker would have done exactly that. So what they did was
make a munificent gift to the market makers. I can't see the
slightest reason for their action, as reported.

I agree with you. This is not the actions of a government
given to even a simple understanding of how markets work.
I think it will be totally impossible for them to avoid playing
with their new toy: Hong Kong, and I am quite sure that
they are unaware of what the consequences will be. One
cool thing about western capitalist governments is that
have been burned frequently enough to know to leave
things alone every now and then.
