You know Les, it's interesting. Physicians that accept Medicare "assignment" payments basically have to subsidize those patients by charging higher rates to non-medicare recipients. The Federal government has done more to inhibit proper medical care than any HMO ever dreamt of doing. If it costs a physician $50 for a blood test and Medicare only pay $30, either somebody else is making up the difference or physicians are less inclined to order the necessary tests in order to keep their losses down. Of course, if there wasn't so much fraud in the Medicare system, perhaps the Federal government could "afford" to pay the "real" cost for medical care for the recipients. bp
