At 40 percent viewing share, MTV3 is Finland's most watched broadcast channel, and is the first European customer for the MPEG-2 high-performance Broadcast MediaCluster video server system. SeaChange recently announced a Broadcast MediaCluster installation for another respected television organization, Group W Network Services in the U.S. MTV3 generates a $200 million gross income from ad sales with more than 300,000 commercial placements every year. The broadcaster uses a five-node Broadcast MediaCluster to encode, store and insert ads into commercial breaks for 11 broadcast regions reaching 5 million viewers across Finland. Broadcast MediaCluster will replace existing video cart machines and video disk servers, enabling MTV3 to seamlessly manage digital play-to-air advertising operations across its entire system from Helsinki. "With Broadcast MediaCluster we're controlling costs and eliminating many of the complexities of managing a sophisticated multi-regional advertising system," said Antero Hoffman, assistant director, MTV3. "SeaChange's unique MediaCluster architecture protects our number one revenue stream with a level of control and reliability that can't be achieved as easily and affordably with other products." "MTV3 is one of Europe's more dynamic and challenging broadcast operations and we're extremely pleased our broadcast system has proven successful there," said Bill Styslinger, president and CEO, SeaChange International. "No computer or television giant matches SeaChange's core expertise in digital video and knowledge of television operations. Our investment and capabilities have enabled us to develop a high-performance solution that allows broadcasters to bridge the gap to guaranteed video availability at affordable pricing." MediaCluster Technology Broadcast MediaCluster employs SeaChange's proven MediaCluster computer architecture, which extends the concept of RAID (redundant array of independent disks) to computers -- or nodes -- within a cluster. Regardless of the number of nodes in a cluster, the system acts like a single fault- resilient video server. Only one copy of video material is required, thereby dramatically reducing storage requirements while guaranteeing the availability of all video at any output. "You can lose an entire server and MediaCluster will still deliver video uninterrupted. If you're multichannel, you still only need one copy of any video for playback anywhere at any time. Distinctions like these will keep competitive server products at a disadvantage," said John Pittas, broadcast products manager, SeaChange International. SeaChange has coupled its video server architecture with world-class digital video I/O subsystems. SeaChange's MPEG-2 codecs use IBM's second- generation MPEG-2 codec ICs, delivering Main Level/Main Profile coding up to 15 megabits per second (Mb/sec) and studio-quality Main Level/4:2:2 Profile coding up to 24Mb/sec within Broadcast MediaCluster. The codecs include serial digital A/V inputs and outputs and other key features required by the industry. SeaChange software provides a non-proprietary video server interface across the cluster for automation system control. MTV3 developed its own automation system that integrates seamlessly with Broadcast MediaCluster. SeaChange customers are free to use a wide variety of automation systems, including those from Louth Automation Systems, Omnibus Systems, Odetics and Sundance Digital. To sell and support MTV3's Broadcast MediaCluster, SeaChange collaborated with JAI OY of Greater Helsinki, a distributor of SeaChange's world-leading digital video solutions. SeaChange's international distributor network enables the Company to maintain a highly skilled engineering field force for front-line sales and support throughout the world. SeaChange will demonstrate Broadcast MediaCluster during IBC '98 in Amsterdam at Stand 118, Hall 8.
