Dell to Mass Produce Computers in Xiamen

September 1, 1998 (XIAMEN, China) -- The port city of Xiamen in eastern China's Fujian Province will become one of the four permanent production bases for Dell Computer Corp.

Dell Xiamen Co., with a registered investment of US$15 million, will mass produce desktop, laptop and server computers targeted at the Chinese market in its Xiamen production center.

John J. Legere, president of Dell Computer Asia-Pacific, said his company has drafted a long-term strategic plan for the construction and development of this new production base.

Sales of Dell products in China are still less than US$100 million, but they will grow by 100 percent in the next three to five years, said Legere.

He added that the company recorded a 1997 turnover of US$13.6 billion.

Dell Computer Corp. began direct sales recently in China.

According to earlier reports, its direct sales will have nine locations in major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen.

It is estimated that China's PC market will be four times what it is today by the year 2002, with some 10.6 million units on the market by then.

That will make it the largest market in the Asia-Pacific region.
