George,

Yes, but until the companies you have mentioned manage to find their way into capital nirvana, otherwise known as the S&P 500, they are merely companies that are, for the time being, in "ascendant technologies", and should not be mistaken for sustainable investment winners that will easily attract large pools of pension fund dollars.
No question about all that data traffic growth ringing someone's bell, but it has a certain way of tolling for the established favorites like LU and CSCO, not for thee or me, and certainly not for the specialized and opportune upstart, which tend to begin life with the severe handicap of being substantially overpriced. Such is the capital allocation process on Wall Street, where road shows and disclosure rules tend to preclude the joys of the undiscovered bargain.

Sam

George, GTR continues to list LSI Logic as an ascendent technology company. Recently, the Company issued a negative pre announcement regarding sales and earnings and BT Alex Brown downgraded the stock citing several negative influences.

Could you give me your thoughts on the future of LSI?

Thanks. Richard

george-

I apologize if I have missed your comments on this, but in light of your thoughts on the importance of bandwidth, would appreciate your opinion on what appears to be an ascendant technology: superhippi(aka GSN):

Gigabyte Networking Begins Rolling Out

The High Performance Networking Forum (HNF) was organized to promote the
Gigabyte System NetworkTMÿ (GSNTM - an HNFÿ trademark) and High
Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) networking and network attached
storage standards. This industry-wide effort is committed to providing
customers with open and interoperable GSN and HIPPI solutions. The HNF
is made up of approximatelyÿ 20 organizations worldwide, including
platform vendors Compaq Computer Corporation, Silicon Graphics, and Sun
Microsystems, plus CERN, Los Alamos National Laboratories, and other
research institutions.
ÿ
Gigabyte System NetworkTM, or GSNTM, is the highest bandwidth and lowest
latency interconnect standard, providing full duplex dual 6400 megabit
(800 megabyte) per second of error-free, flow controlled data. The
technology is ideal wherever organizations require timely movement of
large amounts of information including scientific and technical
computing, HDTV, data mining, transaction processing, video and film
archiving, and storage management.ÿ The proposed ANSI standard provides
for interoperability with Ethernet, Fibre Channel, ATM, HIPPI-800 and
other standards.

George: Could you be so kind as to provide a reading list of 10 to 15 books that you feel would be most helpful in understanding the future direction of various technologies. You thoughts, as always, are deeply appreciated.

Regards

Jock Hutchinson
