Elizabeth, Agreat deal of Canada's potential has been squandered by our electoral system. the lack of a true majority over the years has allowed well organised destructive splinters groups, like the NDP to get elected from time to time as people become too passive and fail to vote. We need a true majority vote system with a $100 payment to voters for voting. Every four years that will be a trivial distributional activity that will get 90%+ of the voters out. More is given with the GST distribution for low end earners. We need a recall mechanism with a realistic number of signatures rrequired to demand a new election. BC has this, but it has such a high threshold that it is very hard to do. We need a mechanism for referendums that make it mandatory for those measures voted for to be enacted. Proposition 13 in California that limited realty taxes to 1.25% of true value from resales/similar is all they are allowed to collect for taxes. So a bloated city beaurocracy is cut off at the knees. Want more money?, fire some workers. Almost all other services are fee for service, like garbage, water, gas, electricity. Over the last 10 years or so it has worked excellently and taxes in california are low and it is still a nice place to see. All the ills the socialists warned about...did not come to pass. We need to eliminate 1 tier of government. Get rid of state/provincial governments. just have city and federal governments. Privatise everything. Sell the CBC, cut the ambassadorial budget by 75%,Send no money to foreign goverments as aid unless they actually use it as intended.(most goes to swiss banks now), Get out of the UN, and associated agencies.(the most corrupt large organization on earth, 90% of budgeted funds is used improperly). But who listens to me But these things would help. Bill
