Online Scams Can Hurt Investors As Stock Market Swings Wildly, Author Warns

Business Wire - September 02, 1998 06:14

DANVILLE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1998--Investors turning to the Internet for reliable information as the stock market swings wildly up and down should
be on the lookout for con artists hoping to make a quick buck at their expense, warns Daniel Janal, author of "Risky Business: Protect Your Business from Being
Stalked, Conned or Blackmailed on the Web." (John Wiley & Sons, April 1998).

"In times of fear, uncertainty and doubt, people look to outside sources for advice. Many people are going online to newsgroups on the Internet to see what people are
saying and thinking.

"Unfortunately, many scam artists also participate in those newsgroups as well. And they are dispensing bad advice and self-serving information," says Janal, a
Danville-based author, speaker and online marketing consultant.

"These scam artists don't care if the market goes up or down, they make money either way," Janal says. "They don't care if you lose your shirt. They only care about
lining their pockets."

Scam artists can make money on market fluctuations by buying and selling puts and calls options as well as by buying stock hoping it will go up, or shorting the stock and
hoping the price declines.

Janal advises people who use the Internet to get accurate information by logging onto the web sites of companies they follow, stockbroker web sites, and unbiased
financial news sites.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating online frauds and stock market manipulations online.

"Risky Business," is a book that shows how to protect your family and your business from con artists, identity thieves, child predators, stock market frauds and other
online maladies, including hackers.

Daniel Janal is a professional speaker, marketing consultant and best selling author of "Online Marketing Handbook," "101 Successful Business You Can Start on the
Internet," and "Risky Business." He teaches Internet Marketing courses at Stanford and UC Berkeley Extension. He was on the PR team that launched America
Online.
