Well, Burma, er,Myanmar, has its attractions. As a four-time visitor I loved it. The commercial life is not dominant there as it is in our culture.

Not say I'd rather be from there - just that insularity from the material God-country (USA) has its attractions.

It's sort of like how we all love to look at small towns, but everyone moves to the city.

I'm not in love with the Western paradigm (my friend Connie calls it "stupidly industrious") with its conspicuous consumption, no time for the kids, et cetera.

But, Clark, I certainly cannot disagree with what you say. It's just not the white hats vs.the black hats, as we all know.

Funny how the most radical conservatives in the US try to increase our insularity.

Peter

Worswick;

<<As an "old India" hand I have watched these "protected" markets wilt as the rest of the world "progresses" to strength.>>

Yes, I thought of India when this all hit. What is it called? Something like the "enterprise control raj" or something like that? God forbid Malaysia ends up in parity with India. But I would be long gone by then.

I thought of China too. But China is not a good comparator in my opinion. In China there is a strong centralised system that has slowly been embracing more and more relaxation in controls. What Mahatir has done has suddenly thrown the car in reverse. So fast that the entire business system came to a halt for the last couple of days while everyone tried to figure out what the hell he meant. The bank manager where I keep a small operating account and a small certificate went to Bank negara yesterday and he still can't completely figure out what to do and what to say to people. Furthermore Mahatir, a hip shooter from way back, has gone completely overboard in my opinion. I recommend that everyone within eyeshot of this post send a spam to Krugman. In fact send two spams. And order pizzas for delivery to his office while you are at it.

best,
Stitch
