Hitachi and Mitsubishi to Close US Memory Factories

Hitachi <TOKYO:6501> plans to close the Texas factory of U.S.
subsidiary Hitachi Semiconductor in a late September move that
will displace about 500 workers. The group noted that the
factory has outdated production lines making low-capacity memory
products and that updating to higher-value chips is out of the
question. Following the closure will come the October 1 merger
of Hitachi Semiconductor and Hitachi Microsystems, a design and
development company, which will also lead to a staff reduction of
150 people. Group plans also call for consolidating 64Mb DRAM
production in a new Singapore factory.
In related news, Mitsubishi Electric <TOKYO:6503>, which closed one
of its DRAM factories in North Carolina in March, will halt its
semiconductor production operation in the U.S. by the end of
October. The price of 64Mb DRAM dropped sharply, and the
semiconductor makers that suffered a huge loss have been forced
to downsize their operations.
