Fujitsu to close U.K. DRAM fab

NEWCASTLE, England-- Fujitsu Ltd. said today it will close its
U.K. fab here because of the global chip oversupply.

Earlier this year, the Japanese firm said it was planning to switch
the fab, which was making 16-megabit DRAMs, over to logic
devices. However, it was decided to simply shut down the
facility because Fujitsu could make the logic ICs at its Japanese
fabs. The Fujitsu fab had a capacity to process 15,000 six-inch
wafers a month.

This is the latest blow to the U.K.'s chip ambitions, following
Siemens Semiconductors' planned closing of its North Tyneside
DRAM fab and the stalled megafab construction by Hyundai in
Scotland and LG Semicon in Wales.
