Paul and all,

the yen has been gaining strength ever since Monday. It appears that no unnatural forces such as Rubin or BOJ are behind the recent move. On one hand, this was kind of what Japan wanted. On the other hand, it just made Japan less competitive. If exporting their way out of the recession was considered a viable alternative before, it is now about 10% less likely (from 147ish to 133ish today).

Do you think this is net positive or negative to the broad Asian picture? Can the Japanese economy support the relative strength of the yen to the dollar?

Have not formed an opinion myself but would like to hear yours.
