IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT CHEWING GUM MARKET:

Poor country spends $6 mln a day on mild drug
Thursday August 27 4:53 PM EDT

SANAA (Reuters) - The Yemeni population spends 20 million hours and 800 million rials ($6 million) each day chewing the popular mild drug qat, a group campaigning against its use said Thursday.

The Yemeni Society for Combating the Damaging Effects of Qat said that, according to statistics it has compiled up to 1995, about 400 billion rials is spent each year on the qat trade, ''which is more than the Yemen state budget annually.''

Yemen, with a population of some 16 million, this year forecast government spending of 350 billion rials.

Qat is a bitter tasting leaf which requires hours of chewing to produce its mild stimulant effect. It is a popular pastime among Yemeni men and women, who usually gather for chewing sessions from early afternoon until late evening.

According to official figures qat accounts for about 33 percent of agricultural production and represents 9.3 percent of gross national product. Yemeni families spend more than 63 percent of their income on qat, the figures show.

The anti-qat society, which made the remarks in its newly launched publication, called on the government to introduce laws that would gradually lead to a ban on selling and chewing qat.

The government has previously warned that chewing qat has been linked to thousands of cancer cases each year.

Yemen, situated on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the Arab world's poorest nations.

AZNT may be at the right place at the right time. Too bad Yemen is so far away. But is this THE MID EAST RUMOUR? (Note: there is no FDA in Yemen.)
