The little "tire biters" are starting to fail - and your precious IDT/WinCHIP will soon be added to that list.

I wouldn't count out the niche players. If they can fill in the gaps that Intel (and perhaps AMD) leave, they can find a nice small little fortune. One such gap is the performance-to-power-consumption ratio that can be addressed with different approaches to design. That's why I feel that Rise and IDT may do very well, and perhaps Cyrix if they can only get their act together.

But it seems that AMD isn't content with being a niche player. In fact, AMD could wind up fighting a two-front war, one against Intel on the top, and the other against the rising niche players from the bottom. If you thought that Intel marketing execs were nervous, just think about how little sleep AMD's marketing execs must get!
