Otis and Orville are out walking around in the hills and come upon a very, very deep hole in the ground. Like all young men in that situation, they begin to throw various objects down the hole to see if they can find out how deep it is. Not hearing audible responses from sticks, small rocks, larger rocks, and one very large rock, they search the nearby ground for something larger. Finding a nearby railroad tie, they drag the heavy beam to the hole and tip it over the edge, leaning over the edge to listen for the sound of the timber crashing into the bottom of the hole. Moments later, after not hearing a sound from the hole, they are startled by the sound of a large billygoat scrambling toward them across the rocky, uneven ground. Jumping out of the way of the charging goat, they observe the crazed animal only briefly as it jumps into the hole. "Whew!" exclaimed Otis, "Did you see that!" "Geeezus!" said Orville. "Damn crazy old goat nearly got us killed!" After another moment or two, they decided to abandon their efforts and walked off down to the nearest road. After walking for a while, they were approached by a farmer in his truck. "Say, boys, I've lost myself one of my animals - you seen a goat anywhere near here?" the farmer asked, leaning out of the window of the truck. "Well, Yessir," Orville said, "but . . ." "Damndest thing we ever saw," said Otis. "Madder'n hell, too. Ran straight at us then jumped down a hole we was lookin' in." "Well," the farmer said, resigned to having to keep looking. "Guess it couldn't-a-been mine - sweet old feller loved people - besides - kept him on a long line tied up to a big ol' railroad tie."
