I think you are exactly right here. Obviously, companies with s substantial R&D investment want to find ways to leverage that in the marketplace. These three companies taken together have the R&D capability and clout to convince Intel that they could make this standard work. Intel on its own would probably propose a standard which handed little advantage to any OEM. The play is to get Intel on board for a standard which allows CPQ, IBM and HP to innovate in ways which protect their high end markets.
