Re: "These three companies taken together have the R&D capability and clout to convince Intel that they could make this standard work. Intel on its own would probably propose a standard which handed little advantage to any OEM. "

My reading of the issue is that these 3 companies want a faster PCI bus, that's all. Intel has been slow to show a roadmap beyond the current PCI specification and these guys are getting anxious for a clear definition of a bus that will take us into the next century.

rudedog. Re: "The play is to get Intel on board for a standard which allows CPQ, IBM and HP to innovate in ways which protect their high end markets." I agree. What would happen if Intel did not go along with this? After all what other source is their for hi-end chips? Could CPQ exploit Alpha with IBM and HP to work around (or use as a threat to counter) Intel's refusal to go along?

From what I've read there is not enough software to make Alpha a viable competitor to Xeon chips. So I'm not sure this scenario could hold water.

Your thoughts?

Does the use of copper by IBM make it a potential competitor of INTC or are they likely just to license that technology? I imagine INTC is working on the use of copper in their MP''s
