Jim, I believe that those people who represent us in the government should operate within the framework of the Constitution(OWFC) . The failure of our representatives to do so has produced or exacerbated many of our social and economic problems. ...establishing what constitutes an infringement on another's rights These laws basically are designed to protect our individual rights, and have evolved gradually and fairly where they were decided OWFC. If I play my stereo too loud, and it interferes with your ability to enjoy your lakeside home, a court has to decide who's rights should be protected. not always an easy answer, but rightfully the subject of our legal system. OTOH, if I am obviously drinking myself to death, or gambling away all my money, as long as I don't bother you, you might try to educate/persuade me to change my life style, but you have no right to force me to make wiser decisions. After I have gambled away all my money or ruined my health, I must be forced to bear the consequences of my poor decisions, if possible adjust my life style to one that makes sense, if not possible probably given very minimal help by local charities very close and familiar with my situation, not given a check to which I feel entitled, and paid for by you through big, unconstitutional, meddling government. I was taught that the pilgrims, in order to survive were told that if they didn't work, they didn't eat. In our society of plenty, we probably don't need to be quite as harsh, but we certainly don't need to be forced to provide a good standard of living for anyone who has problems. Many people are confusing equal opportunity with equality. In 20 years we may be looking at an even greater increase in teen pregnancies and 'fatherless' children. Obviously, the federal government programs have been counterproductive. More programs run by "big brother" won't work either. Why should I be forced to help support anyone else's children? Why should anyone else be forced to help support my children? Let people keep the money they have earned and make their decisions accordingly. We pay excessive taxes for what? The politicians take money from us, propose programs to buy votes from the ignorant, pay off their cronies to run them, and the programs don't work or are counter productive. A flat tax would be a step in the right direction. The government does not have the right OWFC, to "protect me from myself". If we continue down this slippery slope, where will we stop? 1. Laws against suicide, 2. Laws against drug use 3. Laws against drinking, 4. ...gambling, 5. smoking, 6. hating(specifying hate crimes as different from the crimes), 7. not wearing a helmet or using a seat belt, 8. choosing a poor marriage partner 9. eating too many fatty foods, 10. not getting enough exercise, etc., etc., etc., Each time infringing the rights of the individual.Once the peer group has accepted behaviors once thought wrong... People need to be subject to the consequences of their actions. Probably much behavior once thought wrong is perfectly alright. Once people thought teachers should never be married, no stores should be open on Sunday etc. Obviously, the pedophile infringes on the rights of his victim.People are weak. Outside of a recognition that they are weak there can only be failure as a culture because the legal structure will be based upon a false and deadly premise - that we are basically good. Our private enterprise system is an example of man's ability to cooperate and thrive. Of course, if we were OWFC, we would do much better. ER
