Internet in India.

Hi Chuck:

I suspect most if not all of the posters live in the U.S but I am sure they visit India often therefore should be familiar with what is going on there.

Internet in India is in its embryonic stage presently,I am afraid.
Cost:High,Rs.15,000.00 for 500 hrs ($1 =Rs 42.00),but recently VSNL
has reduced the price by 33%.

ISP:Currently run by VSNL a government monopoly but recently the government has allowed private ISPs to operate in India. This should hopefully bring the cost down as many companies, local and foreign, have applied for permission to operate private ISPs.

Dial-up cost. There is no dial up cost for people who live in most of the metros but there is a dial-up cost for those who connect from other areas.

British Telecom joins the Mittals to enter the Internet market in India.

Hi Chuck:

Here is the latest news on the Internet and ISP scene in India.

Excerpts.

Global telecom major, British Telecom (BT) has tied up with the Mittals of Bharti group to enter the Indian Internet services market. With an initial equity capital of Rs 43 crore, the joint venture has an ambitious plan of offering Internet services and electronic commerce solutions across the country....

Its entry into the ISP business is seen to be indicative of the business potential in the nascent Indian market. So far over 50 companies have expressed interest in being ISPs in the country and some 180 ISP applications have been picked up by investors. Potential ISPs include telecom majors like MCI, Microsoft, IBM, Motorola and Compuserve. Others in the fray are Sprint RPG, Infosys, Datapro, Icnet, HCL, Fujitsu ICIM, Satyam Infohighway, Allent Technologies and the state-owned CMC.

Currently, there are four state-owned ISPs in the country: VSNL, department of telecommunications, NICNET of the National Informatics Centre and ERNET of the department of electronics. Between them, these ISPs account for almost 200,000 Internet subscribers - a number which is expected to grow to some 1-1.5 million by 2001-02 and 5 million by 2007-08.....
