Interesting story on ZD Net about CD-R, and how its success is hurting DVD.

zdnet.com

Especially interesting is the graph depicting trends for CD-R unit sales. Despite the fact that a certain someone has been saying on this thread for months that CD-R sales would exceed 15 million units this year, the chart indicates sales of less than 5 million for 1998. It's next year that the 15 million number is expected.

Of course, we already have 8 months of data for 1998, and none for 1999. So while this year's number of around 5 mil is probably quite close to being correct, next year's numbers could be either higher or lower.

The media numbers are pretty amazing, though. The estimate is that 150 million CD-R disks were shipped last quarter, and it's expected that by 2001, more than 2 billion disks a year will be sold. But nobody is making any money selling them. Prices are just too low.

Just a little perspective,

at $3 5/8, IOM is down 87% from its all-time high.
